Another 2046 kg of plastic sent for recycling

Before the year 2022 comes to an end, we were able to quickly load 57 large rice sacks full of sorted and shredded plastic for shipment to Surabaya. There, it will first become pellets and then new plastic products. Quite a large amount that would otherwise be floating in the Banda Sea by now.

Where did this plastic come from?

A large part was fished out of the sea and collected from the coasts by our hard-working Luminocean team from Banda and our volunteers Ella and Nika. The rest was contributed by various plastic collectors who receive a monetary credit per kg for this on our behalf (plastic bank). So this "plastic bank plastic" either also comes from the sea and beaches, or directly from participating households, so it doesn't end up in the sea in the first place.

Ella has spent the last few weeks building an interactive spreadsheet and training our team to use it. With this, we will soon be able to accurately track every source of plastic shipped, and break down the details more easily and publish them regularly.

Up-scaling

In order to be able to remove more plastic from the sea and recycle it, we are now working together with Planeton. There, people can offset their own plastic consumption. We receive a donation for this and can thus always connect people to our plastic bank. Offsetting plastic via Planeton is also a nice gift idea, e.g. for Christmas. You can find more information about this here.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us this year: without you and you, none of this would have been possible!

We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2023.
