Our waste prevention program in the Banda Islands received support from Bank Indonesia to train 8 young people in diving. The aim is to get them excited about the underwater world and to build a team that regularly collects plastic waste during dives.
Today it started for the first 4 course participants. With our floating garbage collection ship, Tirta Intan, we drove to a point where a lot of plastic rubbish was always washed up. Here we fished out the plastic waste with nets and wading in the water. Then Nengsi, Nari, Juanda (photo above left) and Fahrist could start their first attempts at snorkeling. Diving instructor Nyellow and project coordinator Maga (bottom middle) were very satisfied with the enthusiasm of the four and so the diving course can start next weekend.
